Let’s Talk About Sexual Health: Youth Focus

Let’s Talk About Sexual Health: Youth Focus provides workers with an opportunity to build their confidence around sexual and reproductive health. The course utilises adult learning techniques, activity-based learning, and encourages participation.

Course Outline

Course topics include:

  • Introduction to services offered by SHINE SA,
  • Introduction to sexual health
  • Overviews of Australian studies of young people’s knowledge of sexual health and sexual behaviours
  • How values and beliefs impact on attitudes to sex, sexuality, gender identity, gender roles, and relationships
  • Sex and the law
  • Sex and digital technologies (sexting, pornography)
  • Sexual and gender diversity
  • Consent and sexual violence
  • Reproductive anatomy and physiology
  • The menstrual cycle
  • Contraception, pregnancy options, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and safer sex
  • Sexual health resources and related support services
  • A framework for talking about sexual health with your clients

 

On completion of the course, you will have:

  • increased confidence working with clients in the area of sexual health
  • a better understanding of how values and beliefs may influence your practice and your clients’ responses in the area of sexual health
  • a new vocabulary about sexual health, gender, sexuality, and relationships to use when talking with your clients
  • practical skills and knowledge to address clients’ sexual health needs
  • familiarity with current resources available and how to use them effectively with clients to explore many areas of sexual health

Organisations, groups or individuals who are interested in the Let’s Talk About Sexual Health: Youth Focus course but are unable to attend those already scheduled are encouraged to contact SHINE SA to discuss the possibility of tailored training. SHINE SA is able to offer training sessions of varied length and content for interested parties according to their needs. Fees will be negotiated directly with the training organisers.
