This interactive course covers both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to become a Cervical Screening Provider.
This interactive training program combines theory, practical skills development, and supervised clinical experience to prepare participants to become Cervical Screening Providers.
This course is ideal for health professionals working in general practice or community health settings who are required to perform cervical screening as part of their role.
The course includes two components:
Delivered through a self-paced online module and a full-day face-to-face workshop, the theory component covers:
National Cervical Screening Program guidelines
Conducting cervical screening consultations
Opportunistic STI testing
Clinical skills development supported by a Sexual Health Teaching Associate (a trained person who gives feedback and helps you learn in a safe and supportive way).
Important: Nurses, midwives, and Aboriginal Health Practitioners must complete both the theory and clinical components to become Cervical Screening Providers. The theory-only option is available for GPs, or as a refresher for current providers and for education purposes.
To be approved as a Cervical Screening Provider, participants must complete supervised clinical training.
This includes:
Performing a minimum of five unassisted clinician-collected cervical screening tests
Supervision by a SHINE SA-approved Cervical Screening Preceptor
A recommendation for provider approval from the Preceptor
Clinical training can occur:
At SHINE SA (limited places available; full-day or two half-day sessions)
In your own workplace with an approved SHINE SA external Preceptor
Participants completing clinical training at SHINE SA must provide evidence of Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII) and a current Child-Related Employment Screening.
Experienced nurses, midwives, and medical practitioners (minimum of 2 years’ cervical screening experience) are encouraged to apply to become SHINE SA external Preceptors, supporting others to complete their clinical training in the workplace.
SHINE SA is offering full scholarships for nurses, midwives and Aboriginal Health Practitioners to complete our Cervical Screening Provider Course — at no cost to you.
Scholarships cover full course fees and accommodation for participants from regional and rural South Australia.
Applications end 30 June 2026.
This initiative is proudly supported by Preventive Health SA.
