Participants will gain practical tools and strategies for clinical teaching, including how to:
Facilitate learning in hands-on training environments
Provide constructive feedback and supervision
Support evidence-based IUD insertion practices in line with current clinical guidelines.
Online Learning (Predisposing Activity)
Participants begin with an interactive online IUD theory course.
This module covers:
Types of IUDs
Pre- and post-insertion assessment
Management of complications
This component must be completed before attending the face-to-face workshop.
Practical Workshop (Approx. 2 hours)
The face-to-face workshop includes:
A review of current clinical guidelines and training requirements for IUD insertion
Practical considerations for supervising and teaching IUD insertion in general practice
Case studies and role plays to simulate training situations and reflect on clinical experience
Clinical Training Delivery
After completing the theory and workshop components, participants are required to train another medical practitioner in IUD insertion to receive full certification as an IUD Trainer through SHINE SA.
A comprehensive training log and relevant clinical guidelines will be provided
Clinical training can take place at either the trainer’s or trainee’s practice
Please note: SHINE SA does not facilitate the clinical training component
Once the training log is completed and submitted, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion as an accredited IUD Trainer.

To be eligible for this training you must have:
Experience in both hormonal and copper IUD insertion is desirable.
Participants in the IUD Insertion Train the Trainer Program should have extensive experience in contraceptive counselling and have well-developed bimanual pelvic examination skills. Generally, this would mean participants have undertaken a FPAA Certificate in Reproductive & Sexual Health or a RANZCOG certificate or diploma, or they are able to demonstrate considerable experience in sexual health and gynaecology.
Application for IUD Insertion Train the Trainer Program is applied for on the assumption of the above and enrolment in training is at the discretion of the Coordinator of Medical Education and LARC Coordinator.
