IUD Insertion Train the Trainer Program

SHINE SA’s IUD Insertion Train the Trainer Program is designed to support experienced doctors in becoming confident and effective trainers in IUD insertion.

This blended program includes both online learning and a face-to-face workshop.

It is tailored for medical practitioners who are highly experienced in performing IUD insertions and are ready to take the next step—educating and mentoring other clinicians in this essential reproductive health skill.

Participants will gain practical tools and strategies for clinical teaching, including how to:

  • Facilitate learning in hands-on training environments

  • Provide constructive feedback and supervision

  • Support evidence-based IUD insertion practices in line with current clinical guidelines.

Course Format

Online Learning (Predisposing Activity)
Participants begin with an interactive online IUD theory course.

This module covers:

  • Types of IUDs

  • Pre- and post-insertion assessment

  • Management of complications

This component must be completed before attending the face-to-face workshop.

Practical Workshop (Approx. 2 hours)
The face-to-face workshop includes:

  • A review of current clinical guidelines and training requirements for IUD insertion

  • Practical considerations for supervising and teaching IUD insertion in general practice

  • Case studies and role plays to simulate training situations and reflect on clinical experience

Clinical Training Delivery
After completing the theory and workshop components, participants are required to train another medical practitioner in IUD insertion to receive full certification as an IUD Trainer through SHINE SA.

  • A comprehensive training log and relevant clinical guidelines will be provided

  • Clinical training can take place at either the trainer’s or trainee’s practice

Please note: SHINE SA does not facilitate the clinical training component

Once the training log is completed and submitted, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion as an accredited IUD Trainer.

Tailored training for rural and remote doctors is available by application. For more information email shinesacourses@shinesa.org.au.
