Contraceptive Implant (Implanon NXT) Train the Trainer Program

SHINE SA has developed a program to support practitioners to become a credentialed Contraceptive Implant (Implanon NXT) Trainer.

Becoming a trainer is an excellent way to extend your sexual and reproductive health knowledge and further develop your skills in teaching and training.

This course is open to South Australian health practitioners who have extensive experience in sexual and reproductive health and a minimum of 12 months clinical experience with insertion and/or removal of Implanon NXT. Experience in training and education is recommended but not mandatory.

This program will provide trainers with the skills to equip trainees with up-to-date evidence-based knowledge and guidelines around the use of the contraceptive implant, insertion and removal and management of complications and side effects. This training is delivered in accordance with Implanon NXT Training Recommendations for Health Care Professionals.

The participant will be provided with training in teaching other health practitioners, facilitating learning and providing feedback and assessment. Health practitioners who insert but don’t remove contraceptive implants may also be eligible to provide training in insertion only.

Course Outline

This course involves both online and face-to-face training.

The online component includes 1.5 hours of self-paced online learning available through our online learning platform (Moodle).
Online training is then followed by a 1.5 hour face-to-face workshop. Virtual workshops for regional and remote applicants (RRMA 3-7) can be arranged with prior consultation.

Our face-to-face workshop will include:

  • learning objectives/outcomes for Implanon NXT training
  • trainee requirements involved in Implanon NXT training
  • Implanon NXT Trainer Skills and expectations
  • Demonstrate your Implanon NXT insertion and removal techniques in a mock simulation training session.
