IUD Insertion Train the Trainer Program

SHINE SA’s IUD Insertion Train-the-Trainer Program is designed to support experienced doctors in becoming skilled, confident and effective trainers in IUD insertion within the community.

This blended program includes both online learning and a face-to-face workshop, tailored for highly experienced IUD inserters who are ready to advance their practice by teaching and mentoring other clinicians to insert IUDs.

Participants will develop practical teaching strategies and clinical supervision skills, including how to:

  • Facilitate hands-on learning in clinical settings
  • Provide constructive feedback and clinical supervision
  • Support evidence-based IUD insertion practices aligned with current clinical guidelines.

Course Structure

1. Online Learning (Predisposing Activity): An interactive IUD theory module, covering types of IUDs, counselling and assessment consultation, IUD insertion, post-insertion counselling, IUD removal and management of complications.

This module must be completed before attending the face-to-face workshop.

2. Practical Workshop (Approx 2 hours): Delivered by an experienced trainer, the workshop includes:

  • Review of current clinical guidelines and training requirements.
  • Practical strategies for supervising and teaching IUD insertion in general practice.
  • Case studies and role play to simulate training scenarios and reflect on clinical experience.

3. Training Delivery

Following successful completion of the theory and workshop components, participants are required to train another medical practitioner in IUD insertion to achieve certification as a Trainer. Participants will receive a training log and clinical guidelines to support this process.

  • Clinical training can take place at either the trainer’s or trainee’s practice. Please note: SHINE SA does not facilitate the clinical training component.

Once the training log is completed and submitted, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion as an accredited IUD Trainer.

Tailored training for rural and remote doctors is available by application. For more information email shinesacourses@shinesa.org.au.
