Early Medical Abortion (EMA) Resources/Tools for Health Professionals

Medication abortion or medical abortion is a non-surgical option for ending a pregnancy in its early stages.

While SHINE SA does not currently provide early medical abortion (EMA) services, we support South Australian doctors and health professionals by sharing evidence-based clinical resources to assist in the safe and effective delivery of EMA.

Who can provide EMA?

Following recent legislative changes in South Australia, GPs and Nurse Practitioners are now able to prescribe and provide EMA without requiring specialist involvement. This marks a significant step in improving access to reproductive healthcare and reducing unnecessary barriers for patients.

These resources are designed to support GPs and other health professionals in understanding and delivering EMA within the current legal and clinical framework, ensuring best-practice, patient-centred care.

Early Medical Abortion (EMA) Prescribing Tool in Primary Care

SHINE SA’s Early Medical Abortion (EMA) Prescribing Tool supports GPs and Nurse Practitioners working in primary care to deliver safe, evidence-based abortion care in line with current South Australian legislation. The tool outlines the key steps of EMA provision — from assessment and informed consent through to prescribing, follow-up, and managing complications — with a focus on patient-centred, inclusive care.
