What to Expect During an IUD Insertion

Choosing the right contraception is dependent on you and your life—and for many people, the IUD offers freedom, ease, and peace of mind. There’s a reason why IUDs have become increasingly popular—they work for a lot of people!

What is an IUD?

An intrauterine device (IUD) is a small, T-shaped device that’s placed in the uterus to prevent pregnancy. It’s more than 99% effective, lasts anywhere from 5 to 10 years (depending on the type), and once it’s in, you don’t have to think about it daily. Some people love that it can be hormone-free (with the copper IUD), while others appreciate the lighter periods or no periods at all that can come with the hormonal version. No matter your reason, it’s a choice that can give you long-term control over your reproductive health.

We’re a big fan of informed choices, so if you’re considering an IUD and wondering what the insertion is like, let’s talk about it.

How long does it take?

The actual insertion only takes a few minutes, but we take the time to make sure you’re comfortable.

How painful is it?

Before the procedure, your clinician will explain everything step by step and check in with how you’re feeling. You’ll have space to ask questions, pause, and feel comfortable with your decision.

The amount of pain felt during an IUD insertion can vary a lot from person to person. Some people feel mild to moderate cramping, similar to period pain. For others, it can be more intense—but only briefly. The important thing is, you’re not expected to “tough it out.” We’re here to support you.

Most people find the discomfort manageable and short-lived. However, if at any point you’d like to pause or stop the procedure, that’s completely okay.

People often ask:

“Will I be offered something for the pain?”

Yes, absolutely and we’ll discuss all your options with you beforehand.

Taking over-the-counter pain relief like ibuprofen and paracetamol before your appointment is recommended and works well for many people.  We also usually apply a local anaesthetic on the cervix during the procedure.

There are some other simple and effective ways to help manage discomfort, such as using a heat pack and adjusting the bed position for easier insertion. It is also helpful to have an assistant present (such as a nurse) to offer support and distraction during the procedure.

If you’re particularly concerned about pain, please let us know—we may be able to offer additional options, including Penthrox (also known as the “green whistle”), depending on the clinic and your needs.

Occasionally, some people might choose to have their IUD inserted under general anaesthetic. We don’t offer this at SHINE SA,but we can refer you to places that can offer it.

“Why isn’t stronger pain relief offered up front?”

Great question. Not everyone needs it, so it’s not routinely used, but it is available in some cases. Your clinician will always talk with you about what’s best for you. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach—your comfort is our priority.

“Can I bring someone with me?”

Yes, absolutely. Whether it’s a friend, partner, or support person, you’re welcome to bring someone along if that helps you feel more at ease.

After the insertion

If you have pain during the procedure, this usually settles quite quickly afterward, within about 5 minutes. Some ongoing mild cramping and bleeding is completely normal and usually settles within a day or two. Most people are fine to return to daily activities quite quickly, but if you need to take it easy, that’s totally valid too. You’ll also be offered a follow-up appointment to make sure everything’s going well.

While IUD insertions can be briefly uncomfortable, the procedure is quick—and many people find the short-term discomfort worth it for the long-lasting, highly effective contraception it provides for several years. It’s a small moment for a big benefit.

Whether you’re ready to book, still deciding, or just want to ask more questions, we’re here for you!
