Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC), including intra-uterine devices (IUDs) and contraceptive implants, provides safe, highly effective and reversible contraception, while also supporting the management of a range of menstrual and reproductive health conditions
While LARCs are highly effective, access can be impacted by the availability of trained clinicians, service costs and geographic location, particularly for people living in rural and remote communities.
The LARC Centre of Excellence will work with healthcare professionals, service providers and community partners to better understand these barriers and identify opportunities to improve access to high-quality, evidence-based reproductive healthcare.
Workforce training and development
From mid-2027, we will offer scholarship-based accredited training for eligible healthcare professionals, helping to build clinical capability and expand the availability of LARC services.
Stronger regional partnerships
We will work with regional healthcare providers and organisations to strengthen clinical services, develop training opportunities and respond to local needs.
Improving access to care
We will help identify service gaps and barriers to LARC access, with a focus on opportunities to improve access for communities across South Australia.
Community voice and collaboration
We want to better understand the experiences, priorities and needs of the people and communities our services aim to support.
The Centre will strengthen existing relationships and establish new partnerships to support sustainable sexual and reproductive healthcare services in regional South Australia.
As part of a national initiative, SHINE SA will also collaborate with other states and territories to support improved access to and uptake of LARC.
Are you a healthcare professional, service provider, organisation or community representative interested in improving access to LARC?
We welcome expressions of interest from people and organisations who would like to contribute to workforce development, regional partnerships, service planning or community engagement.
Register your interest to tell us about your priorities, ideas and areas of interest.
This LARC Centre of Excellence has been made possible by funding by Country SA PHN.
