Disproportionate impact of STIs and BBVs in Indigenous communities

The South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute has presented data to the Federal Government which show a “huge disparity” in the rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and blood-borne viruses (BBVs) in Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations, with Indigenous communities recording rates of gonorrhoea 10 times higher than the general population.

The Sydney Morning Herald article linked below contains interactive infographics illustrating Indigenous rates of STIs/BBVs, compared to the non-Indigenous population. The graphic can be adjusted to display chlamydia, syphilis, gonorrhoea, HIV & hepatitis B.
