Rules About Sex: Getting Them Right

This workshop will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to teach people with a disability about sex and relationships. Participants will learn strategies for sexual safety and improved relationships.

Course Outline

This workshop will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to:

  • break down key concepts of socially and legally acceptable sexual behaviour into simple language relating to rights, responsibilities and impacts
  • create visual materials tailored to the needs of specific young people with learning-related disabilities
  • source and use other existing resources to support the work

Strategies to teach about sexual safety and improved relationships will also be discussed, taking into account increased incidence of:

  • people with a disability being less educated about sexual matters
  • sexual victimisation of people with disability
  • problematic sexual behaviours
  • vulnerable people with a disability having involvement with the law and possible long-term consequences of this

Participants will leave with a suite of images and a manual, both in electronic form which they can use in their work.
